More than 200 people arrested for contravening lockdown regulations in NW

In day four of the Country’s lockdown, more than 200 people have been arrested and charged for contravening regulations of the Disaster Management Act, 2002 (Act No. 57 of 2002).

The suspects were arrested in contravention of Regulation 11B (1), failing to confine to their residential places, while others were arrested for movement between the metropolitan and district areas, misrepresentation that he/she or any other person is infected with COVID-19, others arrested for failure to close liquor premises and those for failing to adhere to prohibition of gathering.

North West Community Safety and Transport Management MEC Sello Lehari expressed his gratitude for men and women in law enforcement for their hard work in ensuring compliance of citizens on lockdown regulations.

“Our law enforcement authorities are working day and night to ensure that people are adhering to the regulations of COVID-19. Our intention is not to harass the citizens, but we need to ensure total compliance to the pronounced lockdown.

“We need to work together in combating the spread of COVID-19 and this is everyone’s responsibility,” said Lehari after receiving a briefing from the Disaster Management on the total number of people arrested.

He continued encouraging citizens to comply to the lockdown regulations and further on social distancing as and when they travel local by permission and those queuing at shops, banks and for other essential services.

Social distancing seem to be a challenge at shopping malls, shops, ATM’s and other places where people receive essential services, however, we will continue monitoring and encouraging our people to comply,” said the concerned Lehari.

The MEC was this afternoon joined by the MEC for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Ms Desbo Mohono in monitoring compliance of shopping malls and shops.

They continued to address shoppers and encourage them to keep social distancing and adhering to lockdown regulations.

“If our people can just comply for the next 17 days, and await the President’s way forward after that,” concluded Lehari.
